Green on St. Patrick’s Day.

The past several months I have been focusing on helping my parent’s pack up their house. Last Friday was a 12 hour move day and Saturday we started to unpack many of the boxes at their new apartment. After those two intense days, Ryan and I agreed we needed to get back to the cabin. Liam is home from UMD for Spring Break so he joined us on St. Patrick’s Day for a workday. We still have not had all four of us at the property at once, but hopefully one day in June that will happen.

Greening up

We are happy to report that the Winter Rye or the WV Slope Mix is sprouting and looks like it will grow where we intended. We are worried about erosion on both our slope and driveway and plan to plant more there in the coming months.

I see green!

I ended up taking a little rest on a camping cot in the sun. I’ve been naturally waking up very early recently and I think it all caught up to me on our drive there. The warmth of the sun felt good.

Other plants on the property are starting to bud, like the maples, ferns and some shrubs. We are anxious to see what types of flowering trees we have and are hoping for some redbuds and dogwoods. As far as seasons go, we saw the property in the height of summer, gorgeous colorful fall and a mild winter. We are finally coming into my favorite season which is spring.

Ryan and Liam spent a lot of time cutting, splitting and stacking wood. I joined in with the stacking and then tried to organize some brush piles from fallen trees. It sounds funny to make a forest tidy but we had a downed tree that took up a large swath of land behind the cabin and I was glad to get it cut and cleaned up. The brush piles will make nice habitat for some woodland creatures and be good for campfires.

We won’t be back for a few weeks. Until then…..
